As I was painting last week, I noticed this unpainted section of the canvas. I found it interesting as a visual element in the composition in the way that it leads the eye like a trail toward the bridge. The great thing about painting is that elements in painting can be emphasized or deemphasized to make a more compelling composition. The reference photograph is useful, but I am not beholden to recreating the photograph as it is. For me, the painting is about the journey as much as the destination. If the process is revealed a little in the painting, I find that even more interesting.
